Trauma-Informed Yoga Introduction Workshop, Ericeira, Portugal, in February 2022
A 3-hour workshop about Trauma-Informed Yoga introduction for yoga teachers and others interested in the topic.
This workshop is to give foundational knowledge about the building blocks of how to approach yoga in a trauma-informed way. The main giveaway from this workshop is to understand the main building blocks of trauma and movement, how to facilitate a yoga class in a way that is trauma-informative for people who have experienced various levels of yoga in their lives. The other take-away from this workshop is to actually personally experience what it is to be in a trauma-informed yoga class, and how this might affect the experience of the yoga class.
For many trauma survivors living in their bodies after experiencing trauma might be challenging. Our body and movement is part of ourselves which often is left out of the therapy experience This form of researched yoga practice is the way to bring the body into the process. Complex trauma constantly drains our capacity for patience, so in this practice, we gain experiences of choices, empowerment and perhaps how it is to feel your one’s own body, skin or being.
As a yoga teacher, it is beneficial to be aware of different individuals stepping into our classes and approaching everyone in a way that is not harmful, pushing, forcing or triggering. It’s good to focus on language, your behaviour as a teacher and the surroundings as well as how these affect your students.
“Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies. The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become experts at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from themselves.”
– Bessel van der Kolk
